GRANTS 2005

 

In 2005, the Fund awarded over $135,000 to 22 organizations for the projects described below.

AchieveKids: Vocational Educational Program providing real-world work experience and social skills training for teenagers with multiple and complex disabilities.

Adolescent Counseling Services:  On-Campus Counseling Program at five Palo Alto secondary schools, providing individual counseling, peer group sessions, crisis intervention, preventive education, and professional training for mental health interns.

AIDS Community Research Consortium:  Provision of meals for enrollees in ACRC Living Now peer education classes, offering attendance incentive for sub-poverty level and homeless participants.

Charles Armstrong School:  Teacher training program to help teachers in public schools identify and work with students with dyslexia who are unable to attend specialized schools.

Edgewood Center for Children and Families: Kinship Support Network Program assisting grandparents and other kin in parenting skills to provide an alternative to foster care for relatives’ children.

EPA Children’s Day Committee: 15th Annual Children’s Day in the Park, a free event designed to foster a sense of community and pride in East Palo Alto.

EPA Mural Art Project: History Through Art and History Through Hip-Hop, in which high school students are trained to teach junior high students, engaging both in learning history through art and music and fostering a positive educational experience for high-risk youth.

EPA Senior Center: Weekly Senior Produce Market and new monthly Saturday Produce Market offering fresh fruits and vegetables at affordable prices to seniors and the greater East Palo Alto community.

Family Connections: Summer Preschool program providing a critical bridge for pre-kindergarten children as they prepare to enter school, additionally providing water safety training for attendees and their families.

Friends of the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo: Outreach Science Education Program providing weekly hands-on science enrichment classes to kindergarten through fifth grade students in the Ravenswood School District.

Hidden Villa: Summer camp scholarships providing a variety of camping and environmental experiences to youth of diverse backgrounds.

InnVision the Way Home: Support for the Urban Ministry of Palo Alto and Clara-Mateo Alliance Food Service programs by providing the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless with meals and groceries.

International Institute of San Francisco: Multi-pronged program to inform immigrant population of East Palo Alto of legal rights and responsibilities, improve access to services, and increase community involvement and participation.

Kara, Inc.: Expansion of Youth and Family Services program, offering grief support groups for families, a new transition group for surviving spouses, day-long workshops, and crisis intervention counseling in the schools.

Music in the Schools: Expansion of music education program in the Ravenswood Child Development Center from five classes to all ten preschool classrooms, and music development training for district preschool teachers.

Palo Alto Housing Corporation: The Edge for School Success Program, a collaborative effort by the PAHC and the Children’s Health Council, providing on-site parenting classes and an after-school program to residents of PAHC facilities with little or no computer skills, to help parents tutor their children by employing web-based learning tools.

Palo Alto Area American Red Cross: Safe Ride Program, whereby teens provide free and confidential weekend rides home to peers who might otherwise risk driving under the influence of alcohol or riding with an impaired driver.

Palo Alto Community Child Care: Subsidy Program enabling school-age children from low-income families to attend educational summer program which would otherwise be unavailable.

Peninsula Stroke Association: New “For Women Only” stroke education project, providing women with crucial, but often neglected, information about this disabling medical condition.

St. Anthony’s Padua Dining Room: Purchase of kitchen equipment needed to continue providing hot, nutritious meals on a daily basis free of charge to all who seek help.

YES Reading: One-on-one tutoring program on the campuses of the Belle Haven School and Selby Lane School, including training of volunteer tutors, family outreach, and curriculum development.

Youth Community Service: YCS Freshmen Leadership Corps, a new program in the YCS Summer of Service leadership development summer camp, designed to develop skills and confidence among Ravenswood District students transitioning to a new high school environment.
